Writing and Language Subscores Shared with Reading

The SAT Suite of Assessments has been redesigned to provide more information by reporting more scores than ever before. Based on interest from higher education professionals in a more granular view of student performance as well as on feedback from K–12 educators seeking a more refined picture of student achievement, the College Board will publish seven subscores, each on a scale of 1 to 15.

Two of the subscores will be calculated based on questions from both the Reading and Writing and Language Tests.

Command of Evidence

The Writing and Language Test will assess how well students revise a passage to improve the way it develops information and ideas.

Words in Context

The Writing and Language Test measures students’ understanding of the effective use of words and phrases in the context of extended prose passages. These words and phrases are neither highly obscure nor specific to any one subject or body of knowledge. They are words and phrases whose specific rhetorical effect is established in large part through the context in which they are used.
